1. ..as discovered on irc, ./sync-all checkout master was invoked somewhere inbetween, causing the wrong branch of Cabal being checked out, which is git submodule controlled, and thus is not supposed to be branch-based.

The remedy is to call ./sync-all pull which will reset the Git submodules to their proper (detached) HEADs.

This is a symptom of the unfinished Git submodule conversion.

The suggestion by hvr bandages the issue and causes the error to go away.

Someone should mention something in the wiki for the time being.
