7.10.3 porting feedback

I have to run GHC on older LINUX versions and this requires patches. I thought I would feed these back so they can be rolled into an official release. The particular release I build on is RHEL 3 and the changes have persisted over several years and are due to lack of "configure" tests for such an old LINUX I suppose.

patches for building 7.10.3 under RHEL3

The new Hadrian build system has been merged. Relabeling the tickets concerning the legacy make build system to prevent confusion.
